Adilabad:
For students of Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies
(RGUKT), Basar, stepping out of their campus or mingling with those of
the opposite sex is a difficult task.
Students complain of a prison like atmosphere in the university as it
is mandatory for everyone to take an out pass before they step out of
the university.
“Leave alone stepping out for leisure, even for buying something
required for projects or other academic purposes we had to prove the
necessity. Two signatures granting permission were required. It was next
to impossible for girls to get an out pass,” said Sai Krishna, an
alumnus of the university.
Students join RGUKT soon after Class X and stay in campus for six
years. It is obvious that once in a while they would like to go out or
call their friends to campus. Outsiders are never allowed apart from
parents, he said.
Moral policing is an issue that students complain about. Another
former student, Muhammed Zubairuddin posted on an online forum, “It is a
sin here to even talk to a girl. Don't ever do that, you will be
dragged into a lot of trouble.”
He wrote of how he was once pulled up by a non-teaching staff member
for shaking hands with a girl who was congratulating him on getting a
good placement offer.
Students also complain of the university not allowing outside food on
campus. A student from Computer Science department says, “We are not
allowed to bring outside food to the campus, even for occasions like
birthday or New Year celebrations. The security guards at the hostel
throw away our food if we try to bring anything. We are forced to buy
from our own hostel mess if we want something special.”
When contacted, a senior university official said, “If students are
allowed to go out they might drink outside and come to hostel or girls
and boys might go out together. We cannot take risk of something
happening to our students. Outside food is also not allowed to be
brought in campus to avoid food poisoning issues.”
