The Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park is considered as a perfect destination
for every wildlife enthusiast and nature lover who is in hunt for the multiplicity
of flora and fauna in India. The park is located in Vanasthalipuram, on the outskirts
of Hyderabad city at a distance of about 15-km on the Hyderabad- Vijayawada road,
which covers an area of 15 sq km.
The park is named after a famous Jain saint 'Lord Mahavira'. It was established
in 1975 on this renowned saint's 2500th birth anniversary.
Once the exciting 'Shikargarh' or hunting ground of one of the Nizam rulers, home
to one of the most beautiful and endangered species of deer the black buck, an estimated
400 deer roam around the National Park fearlessly.
Deer Park
The government reclaimed the park area and started a ‘deer park’ to conserve the
prized tradition and revitalize it. The deer park is maintained by the Forest Department,
holds an area of 189 hectares.
Flora & Fauna
The vegetation of the park is rich with flora like Neem, Butea, Bauhinias Accacias
and many thorny shrubs. There are many species of animals here, including Cheetahs,
Wild Boar, Monitor Lizards, and Porcupines. There are different varieties of Partridges,
Quails, Peacocks, Pond Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers and Cormorants. More than 80
species of migratory birds can be seen here in the vicinity of the park.
Tourist Activities and Facilities
The national park has the facility for audio-visual sessions, bird watching, nature
walk and jungle safaris. Rest sheds and observation towers are available inside
the park for viewing the animals. Vans can be hired to move about in the sanctuary.
There is an exhibition hall, which displays various items of the wild life conservation.
