Hyderabad:
The clamour for the Centre’s Smart City tag is growing. After the
inclusion of Warangal, the Telangana state government on Wednesday
sought the inclusion of Karimnagar in the Smart Cities list, in place of
Hyderabad for which the government had given up the claim earlier.
Karimnagar TRS MP B. Vinod Kumar accompanied by Special
Representative Dr S Venugopala Chary met Union minister M. Venkaiah
Naidu and sought the inclusion of Karimnagar as a Smart City. He also
submitted a memorandum listing the facilities available in Karimnagar.
He gave a copy of the letter written by commissioner and director of
municipal administration regarding the withdrawal of the nomination of
Hyderabad as a Smart City and proposed the name of Karimnagar. Mr Naidu
promised to consider the plea.
The main objective of the Smart City concept is to promote cities
that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to
its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of
‘smart’ solutions.
The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and the idea
is to look at compact areas, create a replicable model which will act
like a light house to other aspiring cities.
