An anchor. A chain with which an elephant is bound and Fettered. A
gold chain made and distributed by the Umara of Golconda of and
Hayat Bakhshi Begum. Under Asaf Jahs, the Ian gar became a State
function and the procession taken out for the sa/aniati or safety of the
kignship on the 5th of Muharram

l’hc I angar was a festival peculiar to 1-lyderahad. I .iterally an anchor, hence a chain with which a Mast elephant is bound and fettered. Historically, it so happened that once Prince Abdullah Qutb Shah (1626- 1672) was riding his favourite elephant named Murad it suddenly got mast (went into heat) and ran away with its rider. For three days it roamed about recklessly with Ahdullah Quth Shah on its hack. His mother. 1-lavat Bakshi l3egum. the Queen of Golconda, filled with anxiety took a vow that she would make a chain of gold and distribute it amongst the needy it her son returned home safely. Her prayers were answered and the elephant returned quietly to the Golconda fort.
The Queen immediately fulfilled her vow by making a chain of gold and sending it to the H ussaini Alam with all pomp and pageantry. The chain was broken there and distributed amongst the poor.
In commemoration of this event, the ceremony used to he performed every year on the 5th day of Muharram. After the fall of the Qutb Shahi dynasty’ when the Asaf .Jahi rule was established the Langar became a State function and was organised for the Salamati (safety) of the Gaddi.
l)uring the reign of Nawab Nasir ud I)aula and Nawab Afzal ud Daula, Nawab Mir Mahbooh Au Khan and in the early days of Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan Bahadur, large contingents of the army. regular and irregular, the nobility, the .Jamedars (Arabs, Pathans, Sikhs etc.) and the Mansabdars formed a procession, which was divided into sections, each being headed by an elephant with a huge standard. The procession used to pass before the Prime Minister and the Nizam who took the salute. The nobility and the Jamedars used to ride on elephants, horses or in palanquins according to their ranks, decorating their conveyance, and displaying their wealth. Hundreds and thousands of spectators flanked the routes and occupied every vantage point to witness this colourful ceremony. It became so famous that the then Viceroy and Governor- General of India accompanied by Lady Curzon planned his visit to Hyderabad in order to witness the Langar, although it was in the middle of April 1902. However, the pageantry attending the ceremony disappeared from 1920
