Raja Dhan Raj Girji Bahadur was one of the leading nobles of Hyderabad. His ancestors originally belonged to Gandhari in North India. but subsequently migrated to Poona and then to Hyderabad. One of the ancestors of the family, Umerao Girji, amassed considerable fortune by trade and rose to eminence and esteem at the court of the Nizani. He advanced large sums of money to the Government whenever needed. Raja Umerao Girji died in 1857 and was succeeded by Raja Gyan Girji in 1876. Nizam VI, as a mark of appreciation of his services, bestowed on him the title of “Raja Bahadur” in 1897. He died in 1905. Raja Narsing Girji succeeded to the property and right, but later the right of succession went to his brother Raja Dhan Raj Girji Bahadur. Raja Dhan Raj Girji was well educated and he was very popular in Hyderabad for his benevolence and charity. He was also well known for his hospitality. Raja Dhan Raj Girji’s palace “Gyan Bagh” is still well maintained by his family.
