Syed Abul Khasim, Mir Alam Bahadur, was one of the most successful Prime Ministers of Hyderabad. Mir Alam was born in Hyderabad in 1752. In 1784, during the British envoy’s visit to Hyderabad Mir Alam acted as a Vakil between him and the Nizam. In 1786, he was sent to Calcutta as a representative of the Nizam’s Government on a salary of Rs. 5,000 - p.m. When Tipu Sultan sued for peace, the Nizam sent Mir Alam to Lord Cornwallis, the Governor General, to discuss peace proposals.
After the capture of Srirangapatnam Mir Alam returned to Hyderabad and he was received with great pomp and ceremony. His success and popularity earned him many enemies. Due to court intrigues, the Nizam imprisoned him at Golconda for a short period on baseless charges. When Azim-ul-Umra died in 1804, Mir AIan’i was made the Prime Minister and held the office till his death in 1808. During Mir Alam’s time the French influence at the Nizam’s Court came to an end. Mir Alam’s policies brought greater power to the Nizam.
It was with the pril.e money which fell to his share after the siege of Srirangapatnam that Mir Alam commenced the construction of the tank known as Mir Alam Tank and constructed a number of rest houses on the road from Hyderabad to Poona and also from Hyderahad to Machilipatnam.
Mir Alam died in 1808 and was succeeded by his son-in-law Muniru l-Mulk as the Prime Minister of 1-lyderabad.
