MEHDI YAR JUNG BAHADUR

Mehdi Husain Bilgrami, Nawab Sir Mebdi Yar Jung Bahadur, was the fourth and youngest son of Nawab Imad-ul-Mulk. Born in 1880, he received his early education at home in Arabic, Persian and Urdu. Later he went to England for further studies. He passed his M.A. with distinction from Oxford University. After his return to Hyderabad in 1907 he was the first Indian to be selected in the Indian Education Service, and served with the British Government. In 1912 he was called back by the Nizam and was appointed as the Deputy Political Secretary. He also served as Deputy Secretary P.W.D. and Finance. In 1920 he was made the Principal of the Osmania University College and at the same time acted as the Director of Public Instruction.

In 1921 he succeeded Sir Nizamath Jung as the Political Secretary. In 1930 he was appointed as a member of the State delegation to the Round Table Conference in London. He was the youngest member of the delegation of four, the others being Sir Akbar Hydri, Sir Amin Jung and Col. Richard Chenevix—Trench. Mehdi Yar Jung also attended the marriage ceremony of Prince Azam Jah and Prince Mauzam Jah at Nice (France) on 12th November, 1931 before returning to Hyderabad from the Round Table Conference. Later, Nawab Saheb was made Sadar-ul-Muham (Minister) and from time to time served as the Prime Minister of Hyderabad. A man of principles, deep culture and highly respected in all circles of society, he was closely associated with the development of education in the State. Mehdi Yar Jung died in 1948.
