Maqdoom Mohiuddin was one of the most popular and progressive Urdu poets of Hyderabad. He was born on 4 February, 1908 at Indole in Medak District. Maqdoom lost hic father at the age of five. He learnt Urdu. Arabic and Persian under the care of his uncle. In 1937 he graduated from the Osmania University and joined City College as Lecturer. Later he left the job and joined the Communist Party and became one of its active members. For his anti-government activities he was arrested and sent to jail several times. During the first election of 1951 he was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly.
Apart from being an active member of the Communist Party and a great Urdu poet. he was a popular labour leader.
Maqdoom started writing poetry from 1933. He wrote a few plays also and was a very good orator. He wrote a hook on Tagore’s poetry which was published in 1935. His collection of poems “Surkh Savera” was .published in 1940 and GuI-c-Tar in 1961. In 1966 his collection of poems Bisath-e-Raqs, was published by Anjuman Taraqqi e- Urdu. His poetry was translated in several languages including Telugu, Hindi. Marathi. Bengali, Russian and German.
Maqdoom visited Russia, China., Africa and several other countries in connection with trade union meetings. In August, 1969 he visited Delhi to attend a meeting of Communist Party Central Council and on 23 August, 1969 he died in Delhi following a heart attack. His admirers formed a Maqdoom Society in Hyderabad. London and in the Middle East.
