William Campbell Maclean was born on 29th November, 1811 in a Highland family. After studying at the Edinburgh academy he commenced his study of medicine at Edinburgh University completing his M.D. in 1833. In 1844 he took charge as Residency Surgeon at the British Residency at Hyderabad. He was the personal physician to Nasir-udD aula, Nizam IV. Nasir-ud-Daula was much impressed by Dr. Maclean and decided to establish a medical school in Hyderabad to impart training to the nativ’ scholars in the Western system of medicine and the Hyderabad Medical School was established in 1846 with Dr. Maclean as the first Principal. He retired in 1855 and returned to England. Dr. Maclean was a good writer and contributed articles regularly to British medical journals. He also wrote his autobiography called “Memoir of a long life”. Dr. Maclean died in November, 1898. |
